There seems to be an ongoing trend toward the "software as a service" concept. You may already be familiar with this idea if you use a product such as GoToMyPC. Essentially, you pay a monthly or annual fee to subscribe to a particular product or service that you will access through your browser.
The part I like best is the idea that you do not need to be concerned about hardware requirements. You won't need a product specialist to do the installation. Normally these products are very intuitive and require little or no training. Most come with a free trial so that you can try it out and see if it will work for you. if you decide you no longer want to use the service or product, just discontinue your subscription.
One of my latest discoveries is a product called EditGrid. It's like Excel on steroids. Very versatile and powerful. Since it's online, anyone with a web browser can access the spreadsheet all at once in real time. There's even an iPhone edition. You can update your Excel in real time as well. You can also export data to many popular spreadsheet formats. Here are a few ideas for using EditGrid:
- time and expense sheets
- retrieve real time information such as stock quotes and foreign exchange rates
